front cover

This is my first draft of my front cover of my music magazine.

Friday, 17 December 2010

Both people in the picture are looking directly at the audience, this makes the audience feel involved. The background is made to look vintage, which refelts the music genre of my magazine, although the background isn't focused on too much as boht people being on an angle makes them centre of attention. Both people in the picture have the same coat on, which refelts them being in the same band.

Tuesday, 14 December 2010

This picture would be good to have in my magazine, as she is looking directly at the audience, This makes the audience feel involved and as if the magazine is directly speaking to them. She is dressed like a typically women pop-star. If i was to use this picture i would take out the background, as it makes it look un-professional and messy. The black and white makes the picture look more professional. The way her hand is on her hip makes her look reilious which refelts the genre of my magazine

Name idea’s for my music magazine

Inner-view- It sounds like interview, and as my magazine is a music magazine it will contain loads of interviews, although interview also means an inside view, so it would make the audience feel as if they are involved with the contents of my magazine.

Pow- This is pop and now together, this represents my genre, and is a onomatopoeic word which links with the fact my magazine is a music magazine.

Volume-This refelts the music genre, and that the magazine is a music magazine. It also could mean that the magaizne has volume, making the title scream out at you.

draft of contents page

draft of front cover

Price of magazine

The price of my magazine, is going to be relitivly cheap as my audience are C2-E and 14-25, most of them are students and therefore they will not be able to afford a highly priced magazine. i am going to price it around £2.00 as this is affordabile. My magazine will be a weekly magazine, as it being a pop/rock music magazine, this certain genre of music updates quikly.

my target audience

I intend my magazine to appeal to readers aged 14-25, this is because i think because i am in this age range i will find it easier because i can focus it aournd things that would appeal to me. readers of this age will more likley to be C2-E, becuase most of them are likley to be students. Students would be more interested in my music, as it is more aimed at there age group.
The way the artist is stood, shows rebillain this contrasts with the way the title is shown like a ransom note.  The way in which her hands are on on hips, with a bit of a smile comes across almost as careless attutuide, this echo's the genre of the magazine. The way in which she has black hair, and eyeshadow on, also echo's the rebilion and the genre of the magazine.

anaylis of double page sreads

Kerrang, double page spread anaylsis

This double page spread contsists of a main picture, the main picture is placed in main view, it takes up the whole of the left page. It shows the artist singing, the picture is in black and white, this fits in with the genre of music and the magazine. The house style, red, white and black also fits in with genre of the magazine. aswell as there being a main picture there is also smaller pictures showing he other members of the band. In the left hand corner there is a website, this is new media, it appeals to a wider audience.

analysis of contents pages

Rolling stone, analysis of contents page
The contents page consists of a main image, This image is to
the right of the page, this picture is a long shot, it focuses on the whole of the two artists. The picture being in black and white makes it looks more old/vintage this fits in with the genre of the magazine. The contents lists the page numbers, and headlines down the left hand side of the page in a column, this makes it look more professional, and less busy. The contents page consists house style colours, black, white and purple this also looks more professional. Each picture on the contents has a caption, this informs the audience what the picture is about, and of. The stories with the pictures, the headlines are bigger than the topics that do not have pictures. This gives them priority. The contents page consists of the conventions of a music magazine contents page.

This contents page belongs to rolling stone magazine, The title of the page is "RS" this is short for Rolling Stone. The title is placed in the left hand corner. This is because the audience reads from left to right.

This contents page is positive because the images show people dancing which is a good example for the target audience, also the word "Good" within the main headline topic is shown which shows a positive side to the magazine overall. The house style consists of fresh colours, this has a positive effect on the magazine and it's audience. The artists shown on the contents page are shown positively as they are dancing and happy. Both
artists are shown performing.

Billboard, analysis of contents page

This contents page's masthead is not so visible as it is smaller, and not of main focus. whereas the title of the page "contents" is the main focus. this makes it the first place the audience looks. This contents page consists of several pictures, all of which have page numbers on them, this makes it easy for the audience to direct themselves around the magazine. The contents page consists of page numbers which allows the audience to find what they are looking for faster. The contents page sticks to a house style of the colours, blue black white and grey by staying with three colours makes the magazine contents page look more professional.
The contents page has a positive effect on the audience as its white background makes it look more positive and fresh, all of the artists shown in the pictures are shown happy, and are all looking at the audience this makes them feel part of the magazine.

The middle smaller picture consists of a man looking up at the readers this could show that the audience is more impotent as the audience are looking down on him whereas he is looking up at them.

The page numbers and topics are broken down into headlines for example "Features" and "upfront" this allows the audience to find there way around easier.

Analysis of front covers

Rolling stone magazine, front cover analysis
The front cover of this magazine, features a masthead. The masthead is covered by the person on the front page, this suggests the magazine is well known as half of the title is covered up, suggesting the audience knows the name of the magazine.
The person on the front cover is in darkness and has his hood up, this adds suspense which engages the audience. He is also looking at the audience which makes the audience feel as if the magazine is targeted directly at them. The house style consists of three colours, grey, white and purple. By sticking to three colours the magazine looks more professional and less busy. The headlines are shown all on one side of the magazine this separates the person on the front cover from the headlines, although the biggest headline "eminem" overlaps the picture, which allows the audience to know that this headline links to the picture, if they didn't know who he was.

Rolling Stone is a U.S based magazine devoted to music, politics, and popular culture, it falls into the genre of pop and rock but also focuses on Indy and alternative music. The magazine is published every two weeks.
Rolling Stone magazine was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner, who is the editor and publisher.      -This information was found from wikkipedia. The masthead shows a source of identity. It allows the magazine to be recognizable too the audience.

The magazine is dark, this puts a negative effect on on the magazine. Although the artists shown fits in with the darkness of the magazine and the negativeness of the cover. "looks back on the darkness of the edge of the town" this is a negative headline, the word "darkness" conveys this.

Although the magazine doesn't mention drugs or alcohol, the subject on the front cover has been involved with both of these things this has a negative effect on the audience, as they are meant to look up to the subjects shown on the covers on magazines. Although the cover story is "Eminem's way back form hell" This suggests he has turned his life around, this may  encourage the audience to do the same.
I think the magazine is aimed at people from the age 14-25, i think this because the subject on the front appeals to this demographic. I also think they are C2-E social class as the price of the magazine is around £2.00, also the stories on the front cover would not appeal to people of a higher class.

The artists that are shown on the cover "eminem" and kayne west" appeal to younger students. The subject on the front cover has his hood up, this is seen to be "cool" so this magazine may appeal to people wanting to gain social respect.

The stories on the front cover give the audience an escape from everyday life. Therefore will appeal to people looking for a diversion.

The artist on the front cover is shown negatively as his hood is up, and we cannot see the whole of  his face. His face is also dark.

Magazine billboard, front cover analysis
The masthead of this front cover is placed at the top of the page, in the middle. It's the first place the audience is drawn to. It also stretches across the whole of the page, right from left this is because the audience reads right from left.  The Red conveys danger, this links with the cover story "my fans don't know who i am." She also has a gun tattooed on her back, this adds to this idea. The subject on the front cover is looking at the audience this makes them feel as if the magazine is targeted directly at them. The house style colours are red, yellow, black and yet. The pun "RE-invention" is used because the sound re is said at the beginning of Rhianna's name.

Billboard was founded in Cincinnati on November 1, 1894, By william H. Donaldson and James H. Hennegan. -This information was found on Wikipedia.

The red colours could mean love and passion, but they could also mean danger. Her mouth being open, and the red lipstick conveys seductiveness. The colour of the magazine is rather dull, this conveys negativeness, also the gun tattoo showed shows this too.
I think this magazine aims at a Target audience aged 14-25, this is because the artist on the front cover also aims to this target audience. This magazine aims at classes from C2-E this is because classes higher than this would not be interested in a magazine of this genre. This magazine also provides a diversion from everyday life for the readers.

The artist is showed seductively, the red lipstick and the artists mouth being open conveys this. Red represents danger, this ties in with the gun tattoo showed on her shoulder.

My chosen music genre

There are many different music genre's that a music magazine can be set around, such as blues, classical, alternative ect. The genre of music that i choose has a big difference on the magazine for example it depends on who my audience is, and what my magazine consists of.

My chosen music genre for my magazine is rock and pop, pop and rock is a music genre that mixes a catchy pop style, with a based rock guitar. It is a mix between two genres too make one. music artists such as lady gaga, Katie perry and Lilly Allen all fall into this category of music, but as do artists such as quiet riot, the fray and foo fighters, although people may think they are of a different genre.

I decided to do rock and pop, as it also allows me to do more with my magazine as it is almost like having two genre's in one. It also fits in with the institution of my magazine, and my chosen demographic.

LIIAR interpretation of the brief

Language

The front cover of my magazine
The front page of my magazine will have to have a masthead which is the name of the magazine displayed in the typeface in which it is designed. This is the visual branding of the title and is usually done in a unique typeface and to be very recognisable.
The font page of my magazine will also need a dateline. This will show the month and year of the publication, often with a price.
My front page will need to contain a main image, usually the main image of a magazine is a medium shot.
My magazine front cover will need cover lines, they are usually distributed around the main image but without detracting from it too much.
The front cover of my magazine will usually contain a barcode.
Also my front cover will need a selling line, This is a short sharp description of the titles main marketing point.

Contents page

My contents page will have Page numbers, this is so the reader knows what page a certain article is and can find there way around the magazine easier.
my contents page will have to contain images  that relate with the music and genre, This is to get the audience hooked they will  want to read the articles to discover what the pictures are about, the images through out my magazine have to be original.
my contents page will have to relate to the font cover, to do so it will have to have the same house style, colours and masthead.
There needs to be captions with the images on my contents page, this is so the audience can understand what the pictures are of, and the relevance of the pictures.
The topics on my contents page should be  Separated into subheadings for example, news, regular stories ect. This makes it easier for the audience to find there way around.

double page spread

Double page spreads usually have a main picture, this inclines what the article is about. The main picture is usually of the subject of the article.
The pictures on the spread usually have captions this is so the  audience understands the relevance of the picture, and what the picture is.
A double page spread usually contains enlarge quotations,  This is something interesting that main subjects of the article are saying this is to get the audience more interested.
the double page spread usually has a main title, this is to indicate to the audience what the article is about.
The double page spread of the magazine usually has about 3 or 4 columns of writing this makes it look more professional.

My magazine will have to follow the conventions of a real magazine as the aim is to make it look as realistic and as professional as possible.

Institution
Kerrang magazine, is published by The Bauer media group. They are a large publishing company in Germany. The Bauer media group also publish Q. Q and Kerrang are both best sellers, but different genre's of music. Kerrang is rock music whereas Q magazine focuses on more serious iconic music artists, but both are published by the same publishers.

Kerrang and Q are both different magazines and focus on different genres of music.

I will produce my magazine for this existing publisher, as they focus on a range of genre's, other than only one type of magazine, or type of music.

Ideology
My magazine will fore fill it's purpose of entertaining, Although the subjects in the magazine will be shown positively as it may be frowned on if otherwise, and if i want people to purchase my magazine, it will have to have a positive effect on my chosen target market.
The messages conveyed through my magazine will depend on it's genre, for example rock is usually associated with drugs and alcohol, but as my target market are aged from 14-25, it is illegal for the majority of my audience to take drugs or alcohol, and drugs and alcohol have negative effects on the human body. But music genre's such as rock do not show this. They shows them as "cool" whereas a music magazine focus on classical music would not be expected to show things such as drugs and alcohol, this is because it aims at a different type of stereotyped audience.

Audience

The target market for my music magazine is 14-25 years old, as from carring out research i found out that these are more likely to read a music magazine as they are more interested in music. My magazine will also be aimed at both genders as most professional, real music magazines are aimed at both male, and female audiences, this will also give me more flexibility whilst making my magazine as i will not have to set everything around one  gender.

These are the social classes my magazine is most likely to appeal to:
C2 - The C2 class is known as the skilled working class for example the Plumbers and Electricians etc.
D - The D class is known as to be the working class, for example this can be people such as the Shop Workers (Shop Checkouts) a worker working in retail.
E -  The E class is also known as the under class for example the people such as Casual Labourers, Students and Pensioners etc.

My magazine is going to appeal to these social classes as rich, high people do not have time to read a magazine, whereas my magazine provides a diversion, which is a form of escape or realise from everyday pressures, it also offers personal Identity, which allows the person reading my magazine to reflect on other peoples life's making them feel better about there own. My magazine isn't going to be too expensive, so that my chosen audience can afford the magazine. these are also the social classes my chosen demographic audience are most likely to fall into.

Representation

I intend my audience, my music genre and my artists that feature in the magazine to come across positively. This is so the audience of my magazine See's my magazine as positive, this will allow them to want to purchase the magazine, furthermore if my magazine was seen negatively my audience would not want to buy my magazine.

My magazine will be stereotypical to it's music genre, and will follow the theme of that genre. This is so the genre is clear to the audience. The artists in my magazine will also be stereotypical of my chosen genre.

Evaluation

LIIAR
Language- The stories on the cover, appeal to the audience as they are relevant topics within college. The stories focus more on the social life of college as this is more interesting than the work side of college to the students.
Institution-My magazine is for Wyke. I chose to make my magazine for Wyke as i go to Wyke so i know the topics impotent around the time of the issue and can focus on real issues within the college.
Ideology-The background behind the girl, is Wyke college this allows people to know that the magazine is for Wyke college. The girl in the picture is happy, we know this as she is smiling. This gives the college and the magazine a positive feeling.
Audience-My target audience are students that go to Wyke. The topics within the magazine will relate to the students as they go to the college. The blocked titles of the cover topics make it easier to read.
Representation-The person on the front of the magazine represents the students that are my target market. Her smiling gives a positive feeling towards the magazine.

Things i would change
The lack of time given to complete the magazine was limited which meant my work was rushed. If i had more time i would have improved my magazine cover and gone into more depth about why i did the things i did.
I would have also planned my work more carefully and analysed more college magazines. I would have researched topics around the college so that i could fill my cover more. I would also have taken more pictures so i had more to work with.

Experimenting

I'm not sure weather to use this picture as my main picture for my cover, If i was to use it i would use it because the people within the picture are both college students, this makes it apeal to my target audience, this is because my target audience are college students, so the main picture focusing on them allows them to think the magazine is for them.

Although, the picture consists of two males, this may put girls off getting the magazine, and the college i am setting my magazine on is a mixed college. Also the pose, and face expression of the person on the left hand side looks negative. He isn't smiling, and doesn't look too focused, this puts a negative view on the college and the magazine. Him holding his arm up, by his other hand ties in with my magazine masthead "college" as he looks laid back.

The pose and expression of the person on the right hand side is a positive pose, He is smiling and looks happy. Him looking straight at the camera makes the audience feel as if the magazine is directly for them, and makes them feel involved.

Research

I like this magazine cover, as it's different, the main picture is not a person unlike other college magazines, also it doesn't have the main stories on the front this makes it look different to an ordinary magazine. The collage background works well as the pictures that the collage consist of are to do with colleges this makes it relevant to the magazine. The title of the magazine stands out as its, black, bold and all though the words are separated the title is together as they overlap, whereas the other pictures on the cover are all separated by whats meant to looked like ripped borders. The writting on the cover is on yellow pieces of paper, this makes them link together as there is a colour scheme through the magazine, and it stands out against the background.

Planning

from looking at this magazine you can see the title is bold, and takes up the whole length of the magazine, this makes it the main focus, the red against the black helps the title stand out. The red is repeated in the magazine, this makes the magazine cover link to the whole of the magazine. The main stories being blocked  and black give them priority, the chosen stories appeal to the audience, for example: "spice up your results" this appeals to college students as they hope for the best results at a-level so are interested in this story.

form looking at these magazines, they have given me some idea's, i want interesting stories on my front cover, with a colourful, bold title, starting in the left hand corner, as we read from left to right. i want a picture of a student looking, well and happy as this gives the college a good reputation, which makes people want to read there magazine.

I want to do my magazine for wyke college, as it'll be easier as i go there, so know the issues that should be on the cover, and i can take pictures from around the college.
